25 September 2000Contact: Kanchan Paser For Immediate ReleaseTeaneck, New Jersey, USA, 25 September 2000….The SUNSHINE Awards™ organization today issued the following statement: BOROKEETE, SESAME FLYERS AND BLACKFOOT, U.S.A. BRING TOUCH OF CARNIVAL TO 12TH ANNUAL SUNSHINE AWARDS™, Saturday, 21 October 2000The SUNSHINE Awards™, already known for its style, excitement and high quality productions, will now add yet another dimension to its level of enjoyment. At the 12th Annual SUNSHINE Awards, on 21 October 2000, when the best of Caribbean performers, artistes and producers are once again honored and applauded for their achievements, the atmosphere at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center at the Borough of Manhattan Community College will be ablaze with the flamboyance and glitter of Carnival. For the first time ever, Carnival masqueraders will be part of the SUNSHINE Awards™ and members of Borokeete, Sesame Flyers and Blackfoot, U.S.A. will enthrall the audience with the colors and sounds usually associated with the annual Labor Day Parade. "This is a splendid idea and will be a first in North America. With the exception of the Atlanta Olympics, this will be the first time that Carnival masqueraders will open an indoor event". This was the reaction of Winston Monroe, Chairman of Sesame Flyers Mas Committee, when he accepted the invitation to participate in the 12th Annual SUNSHINE Awards™. Mr. Monroe commends Gil Figaro, Sr., its Founder and Chairman, for "…showing a lot of vision". He feels that adding this aspect of Carnival to the Show demonstrates that the SUNSHINE Awards™ has "…the correct focus". Keith Marcelle, Manager of the Sesame Flyers Steel Orchestra, shares Monroe's enthusiasm and thinks that, "….having other aspects of Caribbean culture [carnival] on the Show will add diversity to the Awards Program". And he adds, "Not everyone gets a chance to be part of the Carnival experience. This will give a wider audience a chance to enjoy the costumes and color of Carnival. It will also be a wonderful opportunity for the masqueraders". Mr. Marcelle says he is looking forward to the experience of being a part of the Awards Program, and applauds Gil for his efforts on behalf of Caribbean culture. The 2000 Labor Day 1st prize winning Sesame Flyers will definitely bring added excitement to the 12th Annual SUNSHINE Awards™ with their beautiful and colorful costumes representing the "Gems of the Earth". The theme and focus of the 12th Annual SUNSHINE Awards is Caribbean Expressions, bringing together a taste of the cultural diversity of the region -- English, French, Spanish, Dutch and Creole. Gil Figaro, Sr. sees Carnival as an important expression of the Caribbean experience. "I have always felt that the SUNSHINE Awards™ is an opportunity for the audience to "visit" the islands as they experience the rich cultural expressions of the region. Carnival plays an important role in our culture and, therefore, fits in very well with the focus of the SUNSHINE Awards™. In fact, it would seem only natural that masqueraders would be part of a program which celebrates calypsonians, many of whom produce music expressly for Carnival." Masqueraders from Borokeete and Blackfoot, U.S.A. will also add to the excitement of the Program as they bring their own colorful and dramatic costumes to the evening's entertainment. Yolande Small, Public Relations Director for Blackfoot, U.S.A, thinks having this aspect of Carnival on the SUNSHINE Awards™ will be, "…a really nice touch". The theme of "Tropical Fantasy" which, she says, is based on the celebration of a Cuban festival, is reflected in the beauty and colors of the costumes of masqueraders from that camp. Borokeete, the other prize-winning band from this year's Labor Day Parade, will add yet another dimension to the Show with their "Tribal Pow Pow" celebration. Section Leader, Donna Warner, is very enthusiastic about being on the SUNSHINE Awards™, "I am really elated and feel it's a feather in my cap to be on the Show". Over the years, new elements have been brought into the SUNSHINE Awards™, each one adding richness, depth and ultimately raising the level of excellence of the Awards. This new addition of Carnival to the Program will definitely give a new meaning to "Play Mas". |
