11 September 2000

For Immediate Release

Teaneck, New Jersey, USA, 11 September, 2000….The SUNSHINE Awards™ organization today issued the following statement:

"TWELFTH ANNUAL SUNSHINE Awards™ - Caribbean Expressions To Pay Special Tribute to Artistes Who Have Passed"

On Saturday, 21 October 2000, the 12th Annual SUNSHINE Awards™ will be held at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Continuing to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of the Caribbean, the theme for this year's Awards will be Caribbean Expressions. Considered by many to be the Awards Show of the Caribbean, the SUNSHINE Awards™ reflects the rich cultural heritage of the region, with Award categories for the various art forms and musical rhythms of our people.

Over the years, the SUNSHINE Awards™ has remained firm in its commitment to pay tribute to the creators, performers and producers of Caribbean art, dance, music and poetry and to promote, preserve and perpetuate these art forms. This year's celebration is yet another milestone as the Program continues in its efforts to acknowledge and honour the creative sons and daughters of the Caribbean.

Since the last SUNSHINE Awards™ in 1999, the Caribbean has lost a number of its creative talents, including Lord Kitchener, Ras Shorty I, Junior Braithwaite, Dennis Brown, to name but a few. The 12th Annual SUNSHINE Awards™ will pay special tribute to all these talented individuals to acknowledge and celebrate the legacy they each left behind. Caribbean arts and culture is richer and more dynamic because of their creativity and talents. Unfortunately, they will not be with us to welcome the new millennium, however, their rich legacy will always remain a part of our lives.

Chairman and Founder of the SUNSHINE Awards™, Gilman T. Figaro, Sr., comments, "It is only fitting that we take time to give special recognition to these artistes and performers who have given us so much enjoyment over the years. They have inspired many young, aspiring artistes with their creativity. Even though they are no longer physically with us, their contribution to Caribbean culture will remain a source of inspiration for many.

"A number of these artistes were also recipients of SUNSHINE Awards. Dedicating a segment of the 12th Annual SUNSHINE Awards™ to the memories of these exceptional performers is our way of paying tribute to them and of showing our firm commitment to continuing to perpetuate the rich legacy they have each left behind."
