SUNSHINE Awards® Bids Farewell to
"Lady B" Beulah Bobb
Teaneck, New Jersey, 7 September, 2001…………… The SUNSHINE Awards®
organization today released the following statement:
With the passing of Beualh Bobb (Lady B), the world of calypso has lost a
talented artiste and performer. The SUNSHINE Awards® joins the people and
Government of Trinidad and Tobago in mourning her untimely death. Beaulah Bobb
was an artiste whose creative talents as a singer and songwriter firmly
established her as an elite calypsonian. Her passing is truly a loss to the
world of calypso.
Lady B started her career as a teenager but it didn't take long before she
had established herself as a first-class calypsonian and she was soon invited by
the Mighty Sparrow to join his Young Brigade tent. She will be remembered for
popular songs such as "Fight Back", "Hostage", "Adda
Adda Ringbang" and "Whoa Donkey". She will also be remembered for
being the only female calypsonian to have reached the semi-finals of the
National Calypso Competition every year since 1977. This incredible record is
second only to that of calypsonian-historian Chalkdust.
Lady B was a member of that elite group of female calypsonians, the United
Sisters, which included Tigress, Singing Sandra and Marvelous Marva. As a group,
and singularly, these dynamic female performers made their mark on calypso and
on Caribbean music in general. Lady B will be remembered for her contribution to
the popularity of that musical team.
She was a young, dynamic and talented performer, who shared her music, not
only as a performer, but also as a mentor to young artistes. She was a generous
individual, who undoubtedly will be remembered by the many whose lives she
affected by her kindness.
Gil Figaro, Sr., Founder and Chairman of the SUNSHINE Awards®, commented on
her passing by saying, "The SUNSHINE Awards® extends sincere condolences
to the members of Beulah Bobb's family and to her many friends. Lady B was a
very special lady and a wonderful calypsonian. She will be missed by the
community of calypsonians, the people of Trinidad and Tobago and by lovers of
calypso throughout the Caribbean."
